Volunteer Services
Hospice Volunteers are ordinary people doing something extraordinary. They are men and women of all ages, interests and abilities who share a desire to help patients and families deal with life's greatest challenge. Through their simple acts of personal caring and concern, Hospice Volunteers help provide the comfort and support to enrich the end-of-life journey.
Types of Volunteers
1. Patient Care Volunteers
Responsible for providing non-medical support services as needed to patients in the home or nursing home. Volunteers may sit with a patient to provide respite to caregivers or run errands in town for the family. Volunteers may read, sing, bake, go fishing, or any other activity to provide socialization to the patient and family.
2. Bereavement Care Volunteers
Ogeechee Area Hospice follows the family for up to 13 months after the death of a patient. Bereavement volunteers may help make calls of support to the family, help with mailings, help with bereavement support groups, and/or help with the annual children's bereavement camp.
3. Administrative Volunteers
Administrative Volunteers do a wide variety of tasks within the Ogeechee Area Hospice office. Working administratively, volunteers may sit at our visitor's desk or nurses station, help with clerical tasks as needed, aid the Community Relations Coordinator with community events, help with mailings and data entry, answer the phones, greet visitors, and/or many other activities.
How to become an Ogeechee Area Hospice Volunteer
Volunteer trainings are held twice per year, in the Spring and in the Fall. Volunteers must complete an application, (see the Forms and Publications section of this website), go through an interview and background check, and complete a 15-hour training course provided by Ogeechee Area Hospice.
